Fred is, even if no one else has an interest.
EDU 10 might be able to help (and he has some cash and an income to invest).

Tiberius

will want to check the gear, breathing apparatus and maybe organise a 'trial run' whereby folks have a drill session of getting in and out of suits and the H&S issues about maintaining stuff and awareness. He preps his Vacc suit and wants to check that vehicles we expect to shuttle around on have integrated air conditioning and suitable back ups should they get any gaps which means the poorer atmosphere can leak in.

What are the effects of the atmosphere, does any medic know. I assume the 'locals' have evolved so that the air quality doesn't affect them. In our normal air cleaned environment on board ship, would the locals have problems of a vice verse nature? Too much oxygen?

The basic issue is much like intoxication. An hour in it, and you are like you've reached your limit at the bar. From there it goes to being seriously intoxicated, then into more psychedelic issues where you start to experience illusions and drug induced psychosis. We haven't had enough time to conduct experiments on the long term affects of trace amounts, so having a purged area in our ship and habitat would be a good idea.

We aren't sure what would happen to one of the natives if they are not exposed to these gasses? Or for that matter there are trace gasses in our atmosphere that have no effect on us, but could have effects on them.

Realizing the general reluctance of most Captains to the discharge of a firearm on their ship, yet needing to maintain his personal standards, Fred completed the Pistol and was anxious to test fire it before the ship departed. Fred had always believed, as a personal superstition, that no weapon was really complete until it had been fired.

Fred hung up a breastplate on a wall in the corridor outside the ship to serve as a target. The Armor was rated for "handguns", so it was expected to stop the round and allow calculation of penetration based on various charges ... allowing fine tuning of the ammo load to the weapon. As Fred fired a 'standard factory load' to test basic functionality, the bullet penetrated the vest and the soft wall behind it. The ship's crew came running at the loud gunshot, and arrived in time to discover Fred with a Bodyarmor Breastplate under one arm and a large revolver under the other hurrying back towards the ship.

Those with sharp hearing can detect a faint 'hiss' coming from a small hole in the wall [where a bullet penetrated a ventilation duct] and there is a row of lights down one side of the hall that have gone dark [where a power line was shot].

"Revolver works." quickly responded Fred to the staring faces.

Hundreds of years in the future, a team of archaeologists explored the long abandoned section of the star port and the mysterious ship that had been docked there for as long as anyone could remember. Cracking the door to one of the staterooms, they discovered the desiccated corpse of a man who appeared to have fallen asleep in the cabin only to never awaken. Brushing aside the cobwebs that encased the corpse in an strange sort of death shroud, the forensic archeologist performed a bio scan and confirmed his suspicion. Fred simply died of boredom ... ;)

Launch day at last. Crew and company make their way to their assigned locations in the spacecraft, and it eases out and into the inky blackness, until it reaches the point where hyper jump occurs.
