Finding the secret door in the "table room" allowed you to bypass it.

I still want to know what was behind that big window.

It was a "fantasy TV" viewing a plane of Chaos. When it was on, there was an astral connection to the plane (but no physical travel was possible through the viewer). It was a conduit for spiritual energies. The keys turned it on and off.
