Background: A promising young outfielder for the Boston Braves, Elmer Ramsey was hit in the face by a Walter Johnson fastball during a spring training game in 1921. Unfortunately, he never appeared in a game in what would have been his second year in the majors due to the occasional double vision he suffered as a result of the beaning, and by June was out of baseball for good. As an otherwise healthy young man with a strong back, he found work delivering furniture for Beckwith's Department Store. This, along with what was left of his baseball salary, enabled him to stay in Boston where he preferred to live, instead of going back home to the family farm outside of Atlanta, Kansas.

He earned the nickname "Big City" when he first arrived in Boston. Not wanting to be thought a rube, when people asked where he was from, he would tell them Atlanta, but leave out the fact he was from the small town by that name in Kansas. If they assumed he was from Georgia, that was their fault. If they asked, he would admit to being from Kansas. As a result, star shortstop Rabbit Maranville hung the name on the kid who liked to make people think he was from the big city, instead of "a cow pasture in a state nobody has ever been to on vacation."

Sometimes this summer I will most likely be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.
